In terms of design, I’m impressed by both smartphones because they come with amazing look and quality materials. The HTC Hero measures 112 x 56.2 x 14.4 mm and weighs 135 grams being smaller, but heavier than the Galaxy S which measures 122.4 x 64.2 x 9.9 mm and weighs only 119 grams. For me, the Galaxy S is much comfortable to hold and wear inside my pocket, so I give my first point to the Samsung phone. Regarding their displays, these smartphones come with toushcreens that display crisp and sharp text and images. The Galaxy S features a 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels while the Hero comes with a 3.2-inch TFT touchscreen with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution. So, once again the Galaxy S wins a point.

When it comes to the hardware department, I should mention that both smartphones are equipped with pretty powerful processors. However, the Galaxy S stands out from the crowd because it’s powered by a 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 8/16GB of storage. On the other hand, the HTC Hero hosts only a 528MHz processor with 288MB of RAM. As I’ve mentioned above, these two high end devices are Android phones, but they run on different OS versions. The HTC Hero runs on Android 1.5 with the HTC Sense UI and offers various features including organizer, voice memo and various preloaded Google apps while the Galaxy S runs on Android 2.1 (upgradable to version 2.3) and offers the amazing TouchWiz 3.0 UI. On the Galaxy S you can find an image/video editor, an organizer and social networking integration.

Regarding the multimedia department available on these smartphones, I must say that both devices come with a nice built-in media player able to support various file formats and amazing cameras. The Galaxy S features two cameras: a VGA front-facing camera that allows you to make video calls and a 5MP rear camera with autofocus, geo-tagging and 720p HD video recording capabilities. On the other hand, the Hero offers only a 5MP rear camera with basic camera settings and video recording capabilities. You will have the possibility to use various connectivity options on both Android phones (including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HTML browser and A-GPS) but the Galaxy S also offers Adobe Flash support and FM radio.

Both devices are impressive but the Galaxy S is definitely the better of the two.

One of the apps you should consider is 160by2, a free app that allows you to send free SMS messages. The downside is that from the US you can only send free SMS messages to India, Malaysia and Singapore. If you are still interested, in order to benefit from this opportunity, you will first have to create an account one the app’s website. About the app itself you will like the fact that its interface is designed to allow you to manage your contacts. You will be able to add the contacts you want to send texts to and organize them in groups. In addition, all the messages you decide to send will be saved within the outbox.
